Green Schools Initiative – Help Us Support LauraLynn!

The Green Schools are introducing two new re-turn deposit bins for plastic bottles and cans with the re-turn logo. These special orange bins will allow students and staff to donate their bottles and cans, instead of returning them to the reverse vending machines. You will find the bins in two locations in the school: the canteen area and the stepped area. If you have a plastic bottle or can with the re-turn logo, simply place it in one of the orange bins. No other items are to be placed in these orange bins. The bottles and cans will be returned through the deposit return scheme, and all proceeds raised will be donated to the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice charity. By taking part, our school community can help the environment through recycling while also supporting a very worthy cause.

Star Programme - HSCL

Every Monday Outreach Workers from Ceart visit the school to deliver the STAR programme to our students who are members of the travelling community. STAR = Supporting Travellers and Roma in schools. The STAR project was established by the government under the National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy (NTRIS) This week students did a little baking, the lesson included literacy and numeracy, and the recipe was chosen by the students. They also learned about sharing the tasks equally, boys and girls, and treated Mr Donoghue to a sample of the end result.

Senior Cycle French film trip

On Tuesday, 10 March, a group of TY and Fifth year students of French attended a screening of a French film 'En Fanfare' (The Marching Band) in the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire. The film was screened in partnership with the Irish Film Institute, which facilitates an education programme for schools. This programme gives students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the French language and culture and to experience real French cinéma.

Back in French class, students will explore and discuss different themes emerging from the film with the aid of the accompanying IFI film study guide. A great time was had by all.

On Tuesday, 10 March, the TY YSI Sharing Smiles class attended Dublin's Mansion House for the YSI Speak Out Event. This event brought Leinster schools together to present their innovative ideas as well as receive feedback from the team of panellists.

The Sharing Smiles team did a fantastic job presenting on all of the work they have completed and hope to continue until the end of the year. It was wonderful to hear other schools' innovative ideas and get the chance to mingle with old and new friends.

The presentations involved lots of props, some funny costumes, great dance moves and excellent speakers.

Make A Book Exhibition

Nine first and second year JCSP students attended the annual 'Make A Book' exhibition which took place In the Bonnington Hotel, Dublin, on Tuesday, 10 March. Along with students from twenty other schools, our students were displaying the book they made for the exhibition which they have been working on since January. The book the students produced this year was called 'World Cup 2026', a guide to this year's soccer tournament which takes place later in the year in the US.

As well as researching, writing and producing a book on the topic, the students also produced a replica of the World Cup trophy which was created on a 3D printer. Other students also created a mini soccer stadium, complete with a wooden football stand, a pitch and miniature footballers. These other elements of the book were created with the help of the Woodwork, Engineering and the Art departments who kindly helped out on the project.

Second year student, Alex Gasper, volunteered to tell the audience about the book and the work that went into it.

Causey Farm Trip
On Thursday, 12 March, TY students travelled to Causey Farm. Students had the opportunity to make their own bread, climb through tunnels, and visit some farm animals. We were lucky enough to meet the latest addition, a baby Highland cow!! From there the group took part in one of the highlights of the trip, bog jumping. Despite the weather, a great day was had by all!

Polytunnel Update

What a great few weeks tending, sowing, and weeding in CCM polytunnel. There are about 10 weeks until school is out with plenty of growing and good weather to come. It may get too hot to physically work in the tunnel, so all our jobs can be done now indoors and outdoors with largely unplanted areas to work on, so perfect for large younger groups. The empty planters have become large soil pits for endless cultivation and digging. First and Second year Science groups with their teachers, Ms Garde, Ms Griffin, Ms Lennon, Ms Mc Donald, Ms Clulow brought groups out to do something outdoors in nature, whilst practically learning about Science outdoors, tying in with topics like food, human health, respiration, and photosynthesis. We even held worms up in the sunlight to study their internal gut and five hearts! En route back to class, we took a nature walk via the Eastern boundary 'native tree row', a perfect celebration for 'National Tree Week', and were delighted to come across some of the artistic creations that Ms Kenny's art class had made in the 'Blast initiative' with Kelly Hood. The structures were created from foraged nature specimens on the grounds of CCM.

Thanks to volunteer parents Cheryl Bruwer, Mary Carpenter, and Liz McGauley for all their help accompanying the students to the Polytunnel. Now on a regular basis, where feasible, we have First years out on Mondays and Wednesdays and TYs out on Tuesdays and Fridays. New carrot crops were sown, to add to our scallions, cos lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, beans and potatoes. The newly added manure will nutrify these crops. Our aim next week is to plant up our potatoes, barley, oats, turnip with our Sixth year Ag Science students; dig out around the bases of the trees in our apple orchard with TY students, and cultivate the ground on the southern western end of the tunnel to make ready for planting out.

First Year Basketball East Final vs Clonkeen College
On Tuesday, 10 March, CCM started the game with their usual hard work and determination, bringing great energy from the opening minutes. An early highlight came from Jack Murphy, who hit an excellent three-pointer. After being fouled on the play and converting the free throw, the four-point play brought CCM right back into the game and levelled the score at 9–9.

CCM continued to battle in the second quarter, with Robert Thompson and Aaron Da Cunha putting in strong performances to keep the team competing. However, Clonkeen College showed great composure and skill, gradually building a lead to leave CCM trailing by 10 points at halftime.

In the second half, CCM found it difficult at times to contain Clonkeen’s skill and teamwork, with the deficit stretching to 20 points. Despite this, the CCM players never gave up and produced a strong run in the final quarter, showing real pride in representing the CCM jersey.

The game finished 41–32 in favour of Clonkeen College, but CCM can hold their heads high after showing excellent character, determination, and teamwork throughout.

Senior Girls GAA

The Senior Girls’ Gaelic football team played in a Leinster quarter final on Monday, 9 March, against Bridgetown. CCM started strong with Brooke Byrne scoring a goal straight away. CCM then got a point and another goal in quick succession. Bridgetown settled into the game then and put a few scores on the board. By half-time, Bridgetown were ahead by a goal. Bridgetown started the second half like CCM started the first scoring a goal within two minutes of the throw up. Bridgetown pulled ahead in the second half. CCM made a great come back in the last ten minutes of the game, scoring two goals and a point but it wasn’t enough. Bridgetown go through to the Leinster semi-final.

This was Millie Phelan’s last game with CCM. She has been a key player for the school since First year, scoring some great points and goals and never giving up in any game. We will miss her next year and wish her the best in her GAA career with Wicklow and St. Pat’s.

First Year Soccer

Wexford CBS 3-0 CCM

CCM First year boys participated in the semi-final of the Wicklow/Wexford Division 1 away to Wexford CBS. CCM started really brightly and dominated possession right from the tip off. Captained by Aaron Kelly, the First years have really developed into a ball-playing team with some excellent players. Wexford CBS were also extremely talented with some exceptional individuals. Wexford CBS went 1-0 up against the run of play and CCM took time to respond. Wexford were clinical in their finishing, where CCM would rue missed chances early on in the game. It was 3-0 at half time and unfortunately Wexford CBS were too strong on the day and there was no way back into the game for CCM.

It has been a great year for the First years in their competitive games. The players will continue to train every Wednesday at 8am in the school. The future is bright for CCM on the soccer front.
