TY Gaisce Walk

A second group of TY students embarked on their Gaisce Walk on Thursday, 16 April. They were blessed with beautiful weather and started the day with a bang. From the very first step, the group set a fantastic pace, everyone moving together, keeping up, and powering through.

The group is proud to share that they are one of the fastest groups to undertake the Walk this year! Between the incredible views and the non-stop good vibes, morale stayed sky-high, thanks to amazing DJ Eoin who kept the tunes rolling all along the way. The students made it to our final stop just in time before the rain rolled in, perfect timing!

All in all, a brilliant first day, with students looking forward to some well-earned activities and rest that evening.

EPAS - European Parliament Ambassador School Programme

Well done to the EPAS Junior Ambassadors who completed the 'monitoring visit' component of the programme last Friday, 17 April, online. This year’s Junior Ambassadors are Emily Crean, Kelly Moore, Luka Bennett, Levi Conway, Tia Keighery, Izzy Dunne and Aislinn Brennan.

Students met with Perrine Cesbron from The European Parliament Office in Dublin and made some short presentations about their work with the programme. Amy Doyle, Fifth year, also joined the zoom call to speak about how being an Ambassador in TY has helped her in senior cycle. Following this, Perrine asked them about their opinions on different aspects of the programme.

The group is now working on plans to celebrate Europe Day which occurs on May 9th.

Fifth Year LCVP Trip to Butler’s Chocolate Factory

On Friday, 17 April, Mr Earls and Ms Davitt’s LCVP class travelled to Dublin for an exciting and educational visit to Butler’s Chocolate Factory. Students enjoyed a tour of the factory where they observed the different stages of chocolate production, from the melting and moulding process to the final packaging of products. Students also visited the chocolate museum, where they learned about the origins of chocolate, its journey from cocoa bean to finished product, and the history of Butlers Chocolate’s. A highlight of the trip was the opportunity for students to decorate their own chocolate, as well as sampling some delicious chocolates.

Wrapparound

On Monday, 20 April, ten of our Second year students took to the stage in the Stanley Quek Theatre in Trinity College, Dublin to perform poems that each of the students had written themselves. They were participating in the finale of the annual 'Wrapparound' showcase event, which is a creative writing initiative where a professional poet or rap lyricist works with the students over a number of weeks and helps them to write their own poem or rap song. The event in Trinity attracted a large audience of about 300 people, representing schools from around Leinster. In front of such a large and intimidating crowd, our students performed brilliantly showing no trace of nerves and reciting their poems with real conviction and confidence. Colm Keegan, the poet who worked with the students, was also there to help the students out and offer them encouragement. Each of the participating students received a certificate of participation afterwards. Thanks to Mr Stephen Doherty for his promotion of this opportunity.

Let it BEE Day at CCM

These was a hive of activity throughout the day on Wednesday, 22 April, as we set up stations in the PE Hall to celebrate Bee Day in CCM.

Station 1 and Beekeeper 1, Colm, featured one queen and 10,000 live bees in the observation hive – we were extremely lucky to see so many bees this year, as the weather has been so bad that it has proved difficult to take the bees out of the hive without a threat of dying. It was great for students to see the live brood frame with the queen.

Station 2 and Beekeeper 2, Yvonne, featured the beekeeping equipment, suits, smoker, hives, frames, wax candles, and other wax beauty products.  We brought microscopes from the Science lab, and the students observed the anatomy of the bee such as legs, wings, and mouth parts under the microscope. Students enjoyed an opportunity to taste the honey.

Station 3: Ms Garde reminded the students of the processes of germination, pollination, photosynthesis, reproduction of the flowering parts of the flower, location of pollen, and then the students had an opportunity to taste pollen. They were able to see and taste the crops that students of CCM have grown from seed in the Polytunnel such as spring onions, peas, lettuce and beans. It was great to understand the co-dependency that we have on bees from farm to fork, and positive mitigation strategies to aid the climate change crisis, which are student friendly.

Thank you to ‘Love the Bees’, senior management, Sodexo, the PE Department, Ms Clulow, Mr Mackey and Mr Rooney, volunteer parents, Ms Cheryl Bruwer, parent of Callan, Conlon and Corban, and Mrs Mary Carpenter, parent of Jamie and Charlie, Grace Wu (Third year), JCSP students and others.

First Year Hurling vs Dunlavin CC

We made a slow start and found ourselves under early pressure, trailing 1-2 to 0-1. However, the lads settled into the game well and began to get to grips with the tempo and physicality. Dunlavin’s spine was very strong throughout, and our defence had to work extremely hard to keep them at bay.

At one stage, we were behind 5-2 to 1-3, but the team showed great character and determination to fight their way back into the contest. A brilliant second-half effort saw us close the gap and put real pressure on Dunlavin in the closing stages.

Unfortunately, we just fell short in the end, losing by two points on a final scoreline of 6-5 to 5-6. A very encouraging performance overall, full of resilience and spirit.

Second Year Hurling

Adamstown: 4-6 – CCM: 2-4

CCM came out on the losing side of this South Leinster semi-final played in Adamstown. The home school raced in to an early lead, scoring the first goal and a point, while CCM had a couple of missed chances before scores from Simon Lynch, Mikey O'Neill and Samuel O' Connor levelled the sides. There was only a point between the teams at half time, however CCM struggled to get on the ball during the second half and the concession of two more goals made the deficit too much to pull back as time ran out.

Kayden Connolly was excellent in goals and made some great saves and MJ Conway, Tiernan Nolan, and Jack Collins worked hard in the backs. Well done to all the CCM players on their efforts. Thanks to referee Dickie Murphy and best of luck to Adamstown in the final where they will play Hackettstown.

Senior Football

CCM 4-10 St Kevin's Dunlavin 7-15

CCM bowed out of the Senior Wicklow A championship at the semi-final stage, losing to a strong St. Kevin's Dunlavin on Thursday, 23 April, in Tinahely GAA.

CCM started the match brightly with early points from Jack O'Leary (2) and Zach Nichols (2) giving an early lead. While many chances were created, they struggled to convert these to scores and Dunlavin took advantage of this, scoring 2-5 in quick succession and controlling the half from here out. A Harry Butler point and Max Free 2 point free got CCM back on the board but Dunlavin replied with a further 2-4, leaving the half time score of 4-9 to 7 points with CCM rueing their many wide attempts.

With a mountain to climb in the second half, CCM died in their boots and gave it all they had, with Sam Behan and Finn Richardson driving them on with an excellent defensive display. Goals from Sean O'Brien, Jack O'Leary, Max Free and Danny McCoy pushed the game close but, unfortunately, Dunlavin ran out eventual winners, 7-15 to 4-10.

This marks an end to CCM's Senior GAA for this school year and also to Sixth year students, Jack Neville, Senan O'Donovan, Joe Culleton, Alfie Doyle, Zack Nichols, Evan O'Connor, Scott Elliot Doyle, Adam O'Brien and Aaran Czwalina, who always represented the school with great attitude and determination.

For the Fifth year and TY students on the team, it represents good experience and a target to get to in the coming years as it is well within this talented group’s grasp. Well done to everyone all year for all their hard work.

Wicklow Junior 'A' Semi Final.

The CCM Junior boys went one step closer to retaining the Wicklow Junior A title that they won for the first time last year with a comprehensive victory over Blessington Community College on Friday morning, 24 April, in CCM.

CCM started brightly with Alex Mernagh, Alex Healy and Alex McKenna kicking brilliant scores. CCM dominated throughout with Ben O’Leary, Failim Redmond, Luke Connolly and Harry Messitt contributing effectively to all attacks. Super scores from Daniel Connolly, Rian Ward and Mernagh stretched the lead before Will Carey finished off a superb team move to palm the ball to the net to leave CCM in a convincing lead at halftime.

CCM made 15 changes at halftime which saw all 17 subs get game time before next month’s final. CCM continued to play outstanding football in the second half with superb scores from Simon Lynch, Richard Carton Kelly and Shane Doyle capping off a great overall performance. CCM now await the winners of Avondale and Dunlavin in the final. Well done to all involved.
