Happy Stand-Up Week!

This week, we celebrated Stand-Up Week in the school with an array of activities. Tutor classes featured a ‘Question of the Day’ competition with a prize for the winner each day. Well done to the winners who include Alex Godeanu, Seán Byrne, Chloe Ryan and Rory Plummer. CSPE classes featured lessons on a range of topics including Allyship which describes how to be a good ally and why. A number of lunchtime events were hosted throughout the week, including a Karaoke Lunch on Monday, a Movie Lunch on Tuesday and Friday and a Quiz Lunch on Thursday. The library featured a display of LGBTQ+ authors and themes, as well as recommendations from the librarian.

The theme for this year’s art competition is ‘Stand up against homophobic and transphobic bullying’. Students were invited to create a poster incorporating this theme. This competition ran all week and the winner will receive a prize while the winning poster will be enlarged and displayed in the school.

Sharing Smiles for Stand-Up Week

Our TY YSI Sharing Smiles group decided to spread some kindness to our schools SASS club by decorating their classroom for Stand-Up Week. This Safe and Supportive Schools club meet every week of the year but are working especially hard for Stand-Up Week.

From movie lunches to table quizzes, as well as their delicious bake sale, they have worked extremely hard this week. The Sharing Smiles group created a display of positive affirmations for LGBTQ+ students and allies for their classroom, as a reminder that the group’s hard work has not gone unnoticed. We hope this put a smile on your faces and that the entire school community, but especially the SASS Club, are having an enjoyable Stand-Up Week.

Senior Girls’ GAA match

Our Senior Girls GAA team beat St David's Greystones at home on Thursday, 6 November, to top their Leinster group and advance to the next round. Missing a few players on the day, this young team were not at all fazed and came out of the blocks early with Ellie Barcoe scoring 1-1 inside five minutes. CCM continued to control the early stages however St David's rallied and came back to lead by 1 point at half time.

St David's started strong again in the second half and scored some early goals but CCM never gave up. The girls began to take control midway through the second half and ended up winning by 3 points in a thrilling contest that ended 8-12 to 9-6 to CCM.

Brooke Byrne was fantastic on the day scoring 6-4 while Reece Hughes (captain) and Millie Phelan added 3 points each from half forward. Congratulations to our junior players Ellie Barcoe, Lilly-Beth Dunne, Summer Fitzsimons and Katie Czwalina who stepped up on the day and all put in fantastic performances.

CCM 3-12 Pres. Bray 0-5

CCM began the Wicklow A championship with a well-earned victory at home against Pres Bray played in Rathnew GAA. Bray began the better of the two sides, taking advantage of a strong wind in their favour, capitalising on handling errors from CCM to race into a 2 point lead and getting plenty of shots off. A Senan O'Donovan point broke the deadlock for CCM and helped settle the early nerves and anxiousness, before a well-worked move resulted in a Liam Cawley goal. From here CCM kicked on and took control of the game, with points from Jack O'Leary (2) and Cillian Czwalina. A Harry Butler penalty goal on the stroke of half time gave CCM a lead of 2-4 to 0-2.

CCM began the second half as they finished the first with a flurry of scores from Jack O'Leary Harry Butler and Nathan Duffy. A Daniel Mitchell goal sealed a win on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-5. Superb defensive displays from Danny McCoy, Sam Behan, Finn Richardson and Sean O'Brien helped ensure a clean sheet while wingbacks Jack Nolan and Alfie Doyle always drove the team up the field out of defence.

A great team performance overall, well done to all players who togged out and everyone got minutes. CCM face CCA Kilcoole away next in two weeks’ time in the next group game.
