UCD Awards Ceremony – Entrance Scholarships

On Tuesday night, 27 February, six LC students from 2022 and 2023, Rían Bryne, Darragh Cahill, Kyle Corrigan Patrick Keaney, Adam Kearns & Simon St John, received awards from UCD based on their entrance and Leaving Certificate results. UCD Entrance Scholars are first-year students who are recognised for their academic achievement and who have achieved 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate (or equivalent second-level examination). These awards are part of a range of UCD initiatives put in place to recognise exceptional students when they join, as well as those who develop their talents while studying at UCD. On the evening, Rían Byrne also received a further award via Ad Astra & UCD.

Well done to all on a fantastic achievement.

Second Year Academic Awards

These awards were presented on Tuesday morning, 26 February, to acknowledge the students in Second year who excelled in their Christmas exams in various subjects. Mr. Guinan and the Year Heads, Mr. Cassidy and Mr Doorley, addressed the students and acknowledged their achievements, placing emphasis on the importance of using these awards as motivation for the remainder of the academic year and for their next set of exams. It was rewarding to see the vast array of students who received these awards across all subjects, with some students being recognised in a number of subjects. Students were delighted with their awards, and there was a lovely atmosphere in the canteen for this event. It was refreshing to see students compliment each other on receiving their awards after the event was over. Each student who scored top marks in their subject in their class group had a photograph taken and this will be sent home to parents to celebrate the student's success.

First Year Academic Awards

First year students also gathered as a year group on Tuesday with Mr Donoghue, Ms Smith and their Year Heads to celebrate their academic achievement. A large number of students received certificates, indeed many received multiple certificates. Students were reminded that if they did not receive a certificate this time, there was still time in the remainder of the year to achieve and once they were achieving their personal best that is what was most important. Thanks to Ms Somers and Ms Crossan and to Mary Smullen for coordinating the certificates and, of course, to the teachers who inputted the scores allowing us to recognise the academic achievement of First year students. Once again, each student who scored top marks in their subject in their class group had a photograph taken and this will be sent home to parents to celebrate the student's success. Well done to all those who have excelled in their exams.

Arts Week

To celebrate Arts Week last week in the school prizes were awarded for the Inktober Competition. The winners were: First Year: 1st Ashton Byrne, 2nd Crystal Hill; Second Year: 1st Tia Keighery; Third Year: 1st Conor McEvoy, 2nd Emily Carey, 3rd Jack Duffy. The overall winner was Mia Anderson.

Well done to you all!

TY Photography Trip

On Tuesday, 27 February, TY4 embarked on the 'InstaTours' Dublin Sightseeing tour under the guidance of photographer, Anupama. The students experimented with portrait mode, explored diverse angles, and tested various compositions. Anupama led them through scenic spots like St. Stephen’s Green, Umbrella Street, and Love Lane, resulting in the creation of a stunning collection of photographs. The tour was a fantastic ending to the photography module.

Fighting Words Workshop

On Tuesday, 27 February, a group of TY English students walked to the library in Wicklow for a creative writing workshop with Fighting Words. This workshop challenged the students' creative skills, with writing prompts such as siblings fighting over money and friends out for revenge. They then took part in a game of two truths and a lie, with a tough question and answer session to determine the liar amongst them. The students were given ample time at the end of the workshop to create their own stories and share them with the group. A great morning was had by all. Thanks to the library for facilitating us and the Fighting Words team for taking the time to come and host this workshop.

Make a Book Exhibition

Eight first year students attended the annual 'Make a Book' Exhibition which took place in the Maldron Hotel in Dublin on Thursday, 29 February. 'Make a Book' is a national event attracting entries from schools all around the country. The project involves students researching, writing and producing their own book on a topic that interests them. This year the students chose as their topic the 'Paris Olympic Games' which take place this summer. The students paired off into teams to research the book. Some of the students also worked with Mr McVicar and Ms Kenny to produce art work to accompany the book. Replica Olympic medals were produced on a 3D printer and painted, as was a model of the Eiffel Tower and a model of the Olympic rings. The students presented their work to a large audience in the Maldron Hotel in Dublin along with a number of other schools

Senior Girls’ Soccer Semi-final

Our Senior Girls soccer team faced Gaelcholáiste na Mara in Arklow in their first semi-final together as a team. Missing some players through injury, including captain Izzy Richardson, did not that affect the girls who played amazingly well, unfortunately just losing out 6-4.

In a very close first half, CCM defended brilliantly, in particular, Brooke Griffin and captain on the day, Hollie O'Connor, and it felt unlucky not to be ahead with GCM's keeper making some great saves. We went in level at halftime 1-1 thanks to a fantastic goal from Laura Fitzgerald.

Two changes were made at halftime with Kirsten Hart coming on up front and Brooke Byrne moving from defence to midfield and the game opened up a bit. Brooke created some great chances and should have scored herself but again the GCM goalkeeper stood firm. The opposition caught us on the counter and scored two quick goals to go 3-1 ahead, however our girls continued to battle and Laura scored her second of the match before Kayla Renwick was fouled in the box and Kirsten converted the penalty. In the final fifteen minutes, GCM's experience and fitness prevailed and they pulled ahead but Kirsten scored her second and CCM's fourth to leave the final score at 6-4.

This is a young team and these girls will, no doubt, use this experience going forward next year and come back even stronger.

South Leinster C Semi-Final

Wicklow Schools: 1-16 - Pobal Scoil Osraí Kilkenny: 5-10

A strong contingent of players from CCM travelled with players from Colaiste Chraobh Abhainn and Avondale to play on the Wicklow combined schools’ team in the South Leinster semi-final, played in Carlow Town against combined Kilkenny opposition of Duiske Graiguenamanagh and Pobal Scoil Osraí on Wednesday, 28 February.

Wicklow battled hard and were always in the game but, unfortunately, trailing due to the concession of goals, one from an early penalty. Eoin Lawlor had a good start at corner forward with an early well-taken point for Wicklow and was unlucky to have a goal chance saved on the line as well. Darragh Leacey played at half forward and made some great catches and also had a very well taken point. Lorcan Byrne was at centre forward and took some great scores from frees and from play. Emmet Ronan and Ciaran Matthews were at full back and centre back and helped greatly to drive the team on. Senan O'Donovan, Matthew Dowling, John Lynch and Adam O’Brien also played well in the backs, and Jack O'Leary was impressive at half forward.

There were six points between the teams at half time and Wicklow came back strongly in the second half bringing the margin down to 3 points. Unfortunately, we conceded two more goals and were unable to find a crucial score at the other end.

Well done to all the CCM players on the panel for their hard work and effort with the team during the year - Lorcan Byrne, Emmet Ronan, Ciaran Matthews, Darragh Leacey, Jonah Fanning, Matthew Dowling, Eoin Lawlor, Adam O'Brien, Senan O'Donovan, Liam Delaney, Billy Bannon, John Lynch, Jack O'Leary.

Boxing Success
